Growth discs: When and how to use them!

growth discs

Not every microgreen variety grows equally well - some prefer it darker at the beginning than others - that's why we've developed growth discs to increase your growing success.

Have you ever wondered why some seed pads don't grow as quickly or produce as many microgreens as others? This has to do with the specific needs of microgreen seeds during germination. We've put together a guide to help you increase your growing success!

Why growth discs?

Before they grow into beautiful microgreens, the seeds go through a germination phase in the first 2-3 days. This is a critical time for later growth success and is primarily influenced by water, temperature, oxygen, light, and seed quality.

The growth discs support this process in two ways:

  • Moisture retention : They help the seeds retain sufficient moisture, thus reducing the risk of the seed pads drying out (ensure the seed pads are thoroughly soaked before applying the growth discs). Light blocking: Light is especially important when the seeds begin to germinate. The discs help maintain darkness for the seeds, promoting faster germination.

But don't the plates interrupt the oxygen supply or suppress germination? No!

    • Oxygen : Even when the discs are lying on top of the seeds, the oxygen supply is still more than sufficient.
    • Seedlings : We recommend removing the discs after 2-3 days, as soon as the seedlings begin to lift them. However, don't worry if you forget to remove the discs – it won't affect the growth success if they remain on the microgreens for an extra day.

When should you use the growth discs?

We recommend using the growth discs from the start for up to 3 days to achieve optimal growth. Once the seedlings begin to lift the discs, you can remove them. When removing the discs, the LED light source should be switched on so that the seedlings receive the light and warmth they need to grow into beautiful microgreens.

How do you use the growth discs ?

*To make removing the discs easier, we recommend that you first pour some water over the discs so that the seeds do not stick to them.
