Growth: What is that white fuzz near the radicles?
Microgreens often exhibit a white fuzz near their germinating roots, known as root hairs or fibrous roots. These typically emerge within 2-3 days of planting and have a soft, cottony appearance. Measuring 5 to 17 micrometers in diameter and 80 to 1.5 millimeters in length, they are particularly small and delicate, but serve to increase the root surface area and improve soil penetration. Their primary function is to absorb and transfer water and nutrients to the plants, thus supporting the natural growth process. Their presence is therefore a sign that germination is progressing successfully and the plants are receiving everything they need to grow. The prominence of the root hairs varies depending on the microgreen variety.
